Spotlight on Culture: Sounds of Jerusalem

March 20th 2017

The Sounds of Jerusalem festival is back for its fifth year in 2017, and the schedule is loaded with the height of entertainment. If you’re in Israel this time of year, you owe it to yourself to check out some of these epic events that will entertain and enthrall you.

Some Details You Ought to Know

Firstly, the festival is being held between March 28th-31st, and all events are free, so you’ve really got nothing to lose.

Second, this is not just another musical festival. There is actual depth and a real message behind the music. The concept behind the festival is simple. Just like Jerusalem is jam-packed with cultural diversity (just look towards the four quarters that make up the Old City for a prime example of this), there also exists a rich musical tapestry that is constantly being woven between the cultures, despite their differences.

Visit the main stage or venture off the beaten path to some of the alleyway performances that are guaranteed to be a hit. This way, you can really get a taste of the entire universe that is the eclectic Old City.

Families Welcome

Families and children will be accommodated nicely as well. This year, the festival will have a family area set up for groups with children to convene right in Habonim Gardens. Stages will be located in the plazas outside Jaffa Gate and the Tower of David. Additionally, you can find stages in the Jewish and Christian Quarters, each with their own style and musical performances. Enjoy everything from classic Israeli music to contemporary styles.

Special Events

Along with the trail of music that will curve through the Armenian, Jewish, and Christian quarters, there are a few lesser known events you’ll want to check out like:

Silent Disco Party: Hear the music through headphones and dance the night away in your own bubble of tunes.

Instrument-making workshop: Use recycled materials to create instruments, marvel at the music box displays, and learn the art of real rhythm.

Don’t miss out on this amazing experience to really get to know Jerusalem like never before!
