Cave of Machpelah

March 22nd 2011

Located in Hebron, the Cave of Machpelah, or the Cave of the Patriarchs, is one of the holiest locations in Israel. When you visit the Cave of Machpelah, you will learn all about the three patriarchs – Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is also the home of the matriarchs, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah (all except for Rachel who was buried in Bet Lechem). Thousands of individuals come every year to the cave to pay their respects to these fascinating and important individuals. The building surrounding the tomb is known for its antiquity and complexity. Originally built by Herod the Great over 2000 years ago, the interior contains medieval architecture and Arabesque decorations from later years.
