1868 Restaurant
1868 was the year that the first stones were laid outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, establishing the modern capital. The building where the 1868 chef restaurant is found was one of the first to be built outside the Old City walls.
Ambiance
1868 is located on King David Street, mere steps from Mamilla Mall and several 5-star hotels. The restaurant, named for the year the building was erected, retains the charm of the old structure, while providing a modern, up-to-date dining experience. The domed ceilings and arched doorways are reminiscent of the 1800s, while polished stone floors with embedded decorative tiles, ironwork on the doors, and contrasting woodwork lend a modern touch. Chandeliers, artwork, and clusters of candles throughout the restaurant give 1868 a romantic and very special feeling. The restaurant is comprised of small rooms that can be connected for larger groups.
Menu
Dishes at 1868 are varied and start with such choices as leaf and endive salad with mandarin vinaigrette, cashews, and Kalamata olives or yellow carrot and vanilla soup with dried Kalamata olives and candied ginger. Also on the menu are boneless chicken wings in a peanut crust with crispy onions and grapefruit, and a dish of green and white asparagus served with apple hollandaise, duck prosciutto, and a quail egg.
Main courses include seared salmon with soy caramel, satay sauce, kohlrabi, and apple; a 300-gram rib-eye steak with leeks and mushrooms and a shiitake mushroom broth; and slow-cooked lamb roast served with mango curry, smoked potato, and lamb jus.
Save room for the chef’s signature chocolate soup, complete with its own ritual: first a bowl of finely cubed fruit, berries, and crumbly cookies is brought to the table. A pitcher of thick, rich hot soup-like chocolate is then poured over the fruit and cookies in the bowl. The dessert is delicious, and the at-table presentation adds a fun touch to the end of the meal.
1868 uses seasonal produce. Some of the menu items change with the season and based upon the availability of ingredients.
Specialty
1868’s tasting menu starts with soup and ends with dessert. It can be customized to include a four, five, or six course meal. It is also possible to include wine pairings with each course. The tasting menu is designed to be enjoyed by the whole table.
Pricing
Selections at 1868 will run you between 52-158 NIS. Desserts and wine are extra. Dining at 1868 is pricey, but the combination of luxurious historical décor and exquisite food make it a worthwhile investment.
