Canela Food & Wine
September 13th 2016
The dining experience at Canela is like none other in Jerusalem.
Ambiance
Calena’s décor is modern, polished, and sparkling, reminiscent more of an upscale New York restaurant than an Israeli one. From the baby grand piano in the corner to the gorgeous chandelier hanging over the sleek bar in the center of the room, you can enter a restaurant experience that you won’t often find in the Middle East. The service matches the environment, with attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful wait staff. The quiet, restful environment makes it ideal for conversation or an intimate dinner. Canela is popular with Jerusalem celebrities and members of Knesset.
Menu
The first course at Canela consists of a variety of tapas, including salmon brochette; salmon served with red pepper spread, mayonnaise, and pickled lemon; potato gnocchi with chestnut and coconut cream; and veal fillet carpaccio in balsamic vinegar and olive oil with a green leaf and small radish salad.
Main courses are varied, with choices of fish, fowl, meat and pasta. Some of the top dishes you can expect include grilled salmon fillet, sun dried tomatoes, and fresh herbs served on crispy gnocchi; chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms and smoked goose breast served with beef broth, roast shallots, and mashed potatoes; grilled rib eye steak (300/500g) in red wine and whiskey sauce served with baked potato wedges and shallot onion comfit; and homemade ravioli.
Be sure to leave room for dessert, prepared at Canela’s in-house pastry shop. Sample the pear cooked in white wine with vanilla pods and star anise placed on a sweet chocolate soufflé and covered in kadaif shreds. After heating the dessert, it’s then placed on a pistachio cream. The other desserts are equally exotic and delicious. Canela has a list of popular and boutique Israeli wines. In addition, there is a collection showcasing selected vintages of top boutique wineries kept in the restaurant’s cellar.
