The Davidka

April 13th 2011

Just close to the beginning of the Midrachov shopping street and the top of the Great Stairs, you will see the Davidka cannon. This cannon played a crucial role during the Israel War of Independence of 1948. Though a very basic weapon, this cannon was effective more due to its great noise than anything else. Opposite the Davidka you can still see the bullet and shell holes on the buildings. The famous Jewish brigades of the Irgun and Palmach joined forces on the 9th and 10th of May. Though their weapons were few, the Davidka’s noise was enough to place fear in the enemy and bring victory closer. Hear about Tzfat’s colorful role in modern Israel history, complete with tales of Jewish mysticism and spirituality.
